There are eight planets orbiting the Sun in our solar system.

The four closest to the Sun are mostly made out of rock.

The four farthest away are almost completely made up of gas.

This means they have no surface to stand on.

They are known as the gas giants.

Gas Giants

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun.

Jupiter
average distance from the Sun
778,000,000km

It is the largest planet in our solar system.

Its mass is greater than all the other planets put together.

There is a storm raging on Jupiter's surface called the Great Red Spot, which is larger than Earth!

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun.

Saturn
average distance from the Sun
1,400,000,000km

It is the second biggest planet but is incredibly light for its size because it's made of lightweight gases.

Its famous rings contain billions of particles of water, ice and rock that travel faster than a speeding bullet.

Some are as small as specks of dust, while others are the size of houses.

Next in line is Uranus.

Uranus
average distance from the Sun
2,870,000,000km

Temperatures on Uranus fall to minus 224 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest planet in the Solar System.

Finally we come to Neptune, the eighth planet in our solar system.

Neptune
average distance from the Sun
4,500,000,000km

An incredible 4.5 billion kilometres from the Sun, Neptune takes close to 165 years to complete an orbit.

This stormy planet has wind speeds faster than any hurricane recorded on Earth.

Our solar system is made up of eight unique and beautiful planets, but we are still a long way from discovering all of their secrets.

Take a journey around our solar system and meet the gas giants.
