Do you think this pretty red rose is male or female?

The answer is both.

All flowers have male and female parts that are needed to make more plants.

This process is called reproduction.

reproduction

It all starts with the petals.

petals

When the plant is still in bud, the petals are protected by leaf-like structures called sepals.

sepals

The petals burst through the sepals when the flowers go into bloom.

Now the petals have opened up we can see both the male and female parts inside.

The male part of the flower is called the stamen.

stamen

It consists of the anther...

anther

Which is held up by the filament.

filament

The anther produces pollen, the male sex cell.

The female part of the flower is called the carpel, or pistil.

carpel or pistil

It consists of the stigma, which collects pollen...

And the style, which carries pollen to the ovary...

style

Which is where the female sex cells called eggs, or ovules, are produced.

eggs or ovules

So every flower contains both male and female parts, which are needed to reproduce...

And to create more beautiful roses.
