A jet fighter is one of the fastest and most impressive aircraft in the world.

It's been designed with a pointed nose and a smooth back.

The jet's shape is an example of streamlining.

Streamlining

This is what happens to air as it flows over a jet.

The jet's streamlined shape allows the air to flow easily around it.

This reduces the amount of friction, known as air resistance.

air resistance

Streamlining makes movement easier, increasing speeds.

If the jet's nose was square, the air wouldn't flow as easily.

Resistance would increase and the jet wouldn't be able to fly as fast.

Racing cars are also streamlined to reduce air resistance...

While submarines are streamlined to reduce water resistance.

Nature has its own master of streamlining ... the gannet.

Gannets

Gannets are Europe's largest seabirds.

They feed on fish that live deep below the ocean surface.

Now you might not think the gannet's body is well–suited for fishing.

Its wings should create a lot of resistance as the bird tries to dive underwater.

But the gannet has a clever solution.

As the bird dives into the water, it adopts a spectacular torpedo shape.

The bird pulls it wings right back and enters the water beak first.

Its new streamlined shape allows it to dive at great speeds and enter the water with little resistance.

The gannet can now reach the fish deep below the surface.

Thanks to its ability to streamline its body, the gannet is one of the world's most effective fishermen.
