When we think about our planet we usually picture all the things we can see around us.

But have you ever wondered what's inside the Earth?

What's inside the Earth?

Let's take a journey to the centre of our planet.

The Earth is made up of four layers.

Right in the middle is the solid inner core, a hot ball of two metals ... iron and nickel.

inner core

The inner core spins inside the outer core ... this is also made of hot iron and nickel, but in a liquid state.

outer core

The solid mantle layer is next.

mantle

It's the thickest layer of the Earth ... almost 3000 kilometres thick.

That's the distance between France and Egypt.

The final, outer layer is called the crust...

crust

It can be as thin as 5 kilometres, and it's the layer we live on.

Earth's Crust

The crust is divided into huge segments called plates.

plate

Some parts of the plates are land, while other parts are under water.

You may not realise it, but these crustal plates on top of the mantle are always moving.

The plates usually only move a few centimetres a year...

Too slow for us to even notice.
