What goes well with a salad?

How about a glass of orange squash?

Both these tasty treats are mixtures.

Mixtures

A mixture is a number of different materials combined together.

They don’t react chemically together and no new substance is formed.

A mixture can be a combination of different gases, like air, which is a mixture of mostly nitrogen and oxygen,

… a mixture of solids, like a salad,

… a mixture of liquids, like squash, which is orange cordial and water,

… or any combination of gases, liquids and solids.

Mud is a mixture of soil and water, often with some bubbles of air inside too.

Mist is a mixture of water droplets in air.

As the materials don’t change chemically when they mix, they can be separated out again.

Chemical Reactions

If the materials do react chemically when they mix, a brand new substance is formed.

Marmalade is produced when fruit, sugar and water chemically react together when heated.

We can’t separate all of the ingredients back out in their original forms.

When you make a cake, you combine the different ingredients to form a mixture.

But when the cake is baked, the heat of the oven causes the ingredients to react chemically.

A completely new substance has been formed and the ingredients cannot return to their original forms.

The change is irreversible.
